Halloween is near, and everyone is already going crazy about it! The kids would surely have a blast trick or treating! Now, since Halloween is coming, it’s only fitting to stick with the theme, right? What’s Halloween without some creepy themed food selection?

And of course, what’s Halloween without pumpkin desserts?

So without further ado, Here’s a simple tutorial on how to make a Halloween cupcake recipe that will take the spotlight on your dinner table!

What You Will Need

The basic cupcake pretty looks the same most of the time. Frostings, however, makes a huge difference. Now, to make awesome eye-catching delicious cupcakes, prepare the following:

For the Cupcake batter:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup turbinado brown sugar
  • 15oz pumpkin puree
  • 1 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon all spice
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 4 lightly beaten large eggs
  • 1 large bowl
  • 1 medium bowl
  • Screw/marble/bolts or any implement that will not melt and smell funny when baked.
  • Whisk/handheld mixer/stick blender

There are quite a few ingredients you have to prepare for this recipe. However, mixing the batter is not that hard with a handheld mixer.

Now, for the frosting, you will need the following:

  • 1 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 4 cups confectioners sugar
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder

Step-By-Step Guide on How to Make Skull-Shaped Halloween Cupcakes

Part I. Bake the Cupcake.

Step 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Celsius.

Step 2. Line cupcake pan with paper liners and set aside.

Step 3. In the medium bowl, mix the flour, salt, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, baking soda, all spice, and ginger. Mix thoroughly and set aside.

Step 4. In another bowl, mix the sugar, melted butter, and eggs. Add the dry ingredients little by little and whisk thoroughly to avoid lumps.  Add the pumpkin puree and whisk until the batter is smooth and silky.

Step 5. Fill the cupcake molds halfway and bake for about 20-25 minutes. Make sure to rotate the tray at least once for even cooking. To check for doneness, gently press the top of the cupcake to see if it springs back. Add a few more minutes in the oven if needed.

Pro Tip:    Alternatively, to stick to the Halloween theme, you can make skull shaped cupcakes! To make skull shaped cupcakes, you will need a few kinds of stuff that will not melt on the baking tray to make the jaw. Place a few marbles, screws, bolts, or any implement that will not melt in the oven or will not smell funny when heated. Fill the cupcake mold halfway through and bake.

Step 6.    Let the cupcakes cool before frosting.

Part II. Creating the Frosting.

Step 1.    Cut your room temperature butter to several pieces for easy mixing.

Step 2.    Add 4 cups confectioner’s sugar and fold the mixture with a spatula. Don’t use your handheld mixer yet, or there will be dust of sugar everywhere!

Step 3.    Now that your sugar is wet with the butter, mix for about five minutes at low speed. When you get a homogenous sticky mixture, add milk and vanilla to the mixture to thin and fluff the mixture.

Part2-Step3

Step 4.    Set aside ¼ of the mixture in a separate bowl and add the cocoa powder to make a chocolate flavored frosting (this chocolate flavored buttercream frosting is essential for designing your skull cupcakes!).

Part III. Frosting your Cupcakes

By the time you are done making your frosting, the cupcakes are more than halfway cooked. Let the cupcakes cool when they are done. Do not frost hot cupcakes. Many people have learned this the hard way. Your frosting will melt on top of hot cupcakes!

Using a spatula, spread buttercream on top of your cupcakes. Serve after dinner or pack them in a meal prep bag for take-out if you can’t get enough of it!

For your special skull cupcakes, there’s a few more details you have to do to impress the young ones and the guests!

Step 1.    Fill your piping bag with the chocolate frosting.

Step 2.    Use a small round decorating tip for dispensing the frosting.

Step 3.    Imagine a skull and draw the eyes, the nose and the teeth on your skull shaped cupcakes.

Step 4.    Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done!

Final Words

This is a relatively easy recipe to make. Although there’s quite a number of ingredients you have to prepare, you will be done in about an hour or an hour and a half. Prepare in advance and serve after dinner!

If you can’t get enough of it, make a few batches and put them in the fridge. Eat sparingly!
