Lives Created With Surrogacy 7 comments

Are You a Candidate for Surrogacy?

There are over 1.5 million married women aged 15 to 44 who are classified as infertile, or unable to become pregnant after 12 consecutive months of unprotected sex with their husbands. Many married couples start to turn to other options for having children, but these are sometimes limited if the intended mother has trouble with or simply cannot safely carry a baby to term. Finding a surrogate becomes the goal of many couples, and it is a wonderful gift that surrogates provide. How do you know if you are a suitable candidate for surrogacy?

Physical Considerations

Potential surrogates should be in good health and already have children of their own. The prime ages to become a surrogate are between 21 and 40. It is best to be employed or live with a spouse or partner who is employed. Many surrogates fall into the working middle class. Of course, surrogates are compensated financially for their time and sacrifice, but having a stable financial environment throughout the pregnancy is extremely helpful.

Health Considerations

Surrogates should be in relatively good health without chronic illnesses, disorders, or other complications that could interfere with healthy gestation, labor, and delivery of a baby. In addition to already having a child of her own through labor and delivery without complications, a surrogate needs to be able to pass a blood test that screens for diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis. Immunization against chickenpox, rubella, and measles is also required.

Emotional and Psychological Considerations

Pregnancy is a difficult process to go through on its own, but giving up a baby at the end is an entirely different complication. As such, it is vital for surrogates to have a strong support system in place. Married surrogates should have a supportive husband, and any children should also be comfortable with the situation. Surrogates not in a relationship should have a strong support system of family and friends to help through the journey.

A thorough psychological screening is also necessary before becoming a surrogate. Candidates should be comfortable and prepared for the medical requirements including injections required before and throughout the pregnancy, as well as the possibility of abortion if the parents decide so in the case of birth defects.Lives Created With Surrogacy

A Precious Gift

There are many different and serious considerations to think through before deciding if you are a candidate for surrogacy. It is not an easy thing to do, but it is the giving of a precious gift to potential parents who are unable to physically have children of their own. Without surrogates, such an experience remains impossible for many parents. If you’re interested in becoming a surrogate, make sure you understand the considerations listed above and find a reliable agency to learn more about the process.

You don’t see this popping up an an option for people often enough and even less so with such informed content. Thank you for that.

After I had my first baby and knowing a few couples that were struggling incredibly hard to get pregnant I was strongly considering this route if things did not pan out for them, for I love them dearly and knew they would have made awesome parents and that they deserved that chance. As it happens regardless of both of them being declared clinically infertile, against the odds their had their own little one and I am over the moon for them. Not long later I fell pregnant with my second and that pregnancy was a LOT harder than my first it made me rethink the level of my keenness for this option but you know I think if it came to it I would still seriously consider it. It is a beautiful whole changing gift to be able to give another person.

    Thanks for the post!

This is one very touchy topic that many don’t understand. Which in my mind means there needs to be more info out there so we can understand more. Thanks for sharing with #TheCozyReadingSpot
