Immunization against chickenpox, rubella, and measles is also required.

Emotional and Psychological Considerations

Pregnancy is a difficult process to go through on its own, but giving up a baby at the end is an entirely different complication. As such, it is vital for surrogates to have a strong support system in place. Married surrogates should have a supportive husband, and any children should also be comfortable with the situation. Surrogates not in a relationship should have a strong support system of family and friends to help through the journey.

A thorough psychological screening is also necessary before becoming a surrogate. Candidates should be comfortable and prepared for the medical requirements including injections required before and throughout the pregnancy, as well as the possibility of abortion if the parents decide so in the case of birth defects.
