Could Sitting Be Damaging Your Health? Learn How You Can Stop The Pain 1 comment

Are you struggling a bit at work recently? It could be down to any number of things; we all know how stressful different jobs can be. You might have a job that is challenging mentally, like social work. Or it might be challenging physically, like firefighting.

However, there are a number of ways you could be making your life, and your entire day, a bit easier. From the super obvious to the things you might not have considered before, here are some suggestions.

Break timeTake Regular Breaks

Staring at computer screens and craning our necks to use the telephone all day takes a toll on us. Not just our eyes, back and posture, either. The human brain needs occasional rest in order to function at full capacity. It can help ease stress and tension. Plus, breaks help us stay alert. This means no snoozing after lunchtime, or in the boardroom. If at all possible, you should break for at least five minutes every hour.

Don’t Compromise On Your Vision

If your eyes and headaches after a long day at your screen, this needs to be addressed. The problem could be with how you’re sitting (see above.) Or it could be to do with the screens position, angle or brightness. If you can’t fix the problem by looking at any of these things, it could be with your eyes. Book an eye appointment; there is no point suffering in silence. If you need to start wearing glasses, pick out a pair you love the design of so you won’t mind. Or, if you’re going to wear contact lenses, choose ones that are tailored to your condition or main issues. Take acuvue oasys for astigmatism, for example. These are contact lenses designed especially for people with that condition. You’ll be amazed how much easier it is to work when your eyesight is sharp, and your mind is clear.

Socializing

Get To Know Your Colleagues

While you might be busy, shy or a combination of the two, it is so important to get to know your colleagues. First of all, it gives you a social network. You’ll have someone to share the tea round with, or to go to the pub with on a Friday night. Secondly, it could literally make your working day easier. People are far more likely to do a favour for someone who has taken an interest in them previously. In turn, offer your help to your colleagues. If someone is moving house next weekend, offer to lift boxes. Even if your help isn’t needed, the kind gesture won’t be forgotten. Next time the photocopier breaks? You’ll have help in spades!

Are you sitting comfortably at your desk

Are You Sitting Comfortably?

Slouching at your desk? It could be doing far more harm than you realise. This four-step checklist to sitting properly at a computer can help. The steps ask you to consider your chair and your keyboard. They also cover your screen, document and telephone. Finally, they look at taking pauses and breaks. As with your break for working, it is advised that you stretch for one or two minutes every 20 or 30 minutes.

As Kathleen mentioned in a similar article, How Blogging Relates to Our Health & Well Being “that she has to schedule time to stand”, get up and move around for at least 30 minutes, like bloggers we get into deep thought and concentration it is difficult to break away.  I know myself have sat for hours at a time without getting up. So we really should take the time to move, whether you sit at a desk or computer, have a tendency to sit for long periods of time then make it a point to move it will be better for your overall health and sense of well being.

Engaging in some sort of physical exercise helps overall health and helps prevent heart disease. It has even been suggested to stand while working on our computer, it will get the blood circulating!
