What type of water purification system should you use in your home?

You may think that you are doing the right thing when you stock up an bottled water for you and your family. But, much of the bottled water that you buy is no safer, or better tasting, than the water which you can get directly from the tap in the kitchen. Bottled water is also a major problem, when it comes to the environment.

So, if buying bottled water is not a good idea, where should you get your drinking water from? You need to have ready access, as drinking plenty of water helps you to remain healthy. Is it as simple as just turning on the tap, and filling a glass with water, to drink.

Why drinking tap water is not a good idea

Unfortunately, most tap water is not that good for you. It contains chemicals that are used during water treatment processes. The chemicals can also add a strange taste to water. Water can pick up other chemicals, pesticides and dirt, on its way along the pipes which are used to carry it to your home. All of this does not sound very pleasant. The only way to make sure the tap water in your home is as clean and fresh as you need it to be is to use a water purification system.

Which water purification system should you choose?

The two most common choices, for home water purification, are a counter top water filter, and an under sink water filter. Of these two systems, the counter top water filter is the most affordable. The lower cost is due to the fact that it does not require any plumbing, but attaches straight to the tap. You can only filter a relatively small amount of water at one time, if you use this system. You also have the disadvantage of not being able to use all of your counter top space for other purposes. 

Many people prefer to use an under sink water filter, because it is hidden away and does not take up any additional floor, or counter top, space. You are also able to filter a larger quantity of water using this system. The downside is that you need to be prepared to invest more money up front. Plumbing is required when fitting this type of water filter, so it costs more.

Both of these types of water filter are useful in making sure the water which comes out of the tap in your kitchen is safe to drink. Water is filtered using either a membrane (or series of membranes) or chemicals, or a mixture of both. Debris is carried away by a drainage pipe which leads to the drainage pipes in your home.  Although you may have to invest a significant amount of money initially, using a water purification system can actually be cheaper than buying bottled water, in the long term. It’s also a lot better for the environment.
