Recipe: Simple and Delicious Sheppard’s Pie Recipe

Simple and Delicious Sheppard’s Pie Recipe

Shepard’s pie is a simple, straightforward and filling recipe that’s perfect for cool days and for das where you need the extra energy.

The traditional recipe includes lamb and mutton, but new versions with beef and even chicken have popped out here and there.

Since this is such a straightforward recipe, it makes no sense for it to be complicated which is why we bring you this very simple recipe. Simple and Delicious Sheppard’s Pie Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 large potatoes, peeled and quartered.
  • 1 stick of butter, unsalted.
  • 1 medium onion, chopped.
  • 2 cups of vegetables of your preference. (Peas are recommended but use your favorite, slow-to-cook vegetables if you want)
  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef.
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce.
  • Salt and pepper to taste.
  • ½ cup beef broth.

Preparation:

Step 1. Boil your Potatoes.

Place your potatoes in a medium sized pot on the stove and cover them thoroughly.

Bring the water to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. Leave your potatoes there for about 20 minutes.

This is a good time to start preheating your oven to 400 degrees.

Step 2. Sauté the Onion

While your potatoes boil, melt 4 tbsp. of butter in a large skillet and add the chopped onions. Cook for about 5 to 10 minutes or until tender and slightly browned.

If you’re going to add vegetables this is when you do it, just make sure to add them according to their respective cooking time, as some vegetables take longer than others to cook.

Carrots should be added at the same time as the onions while peas and corn should be added by the end of it. If you’re using any other kind of vegetables for this recipe make sure to research how long it takes for them to cook before you add them to the skillet.

Step 3. Add the Protein

Once your vegetables have been sauted add your grown beef to the pan and stir so it mixes well with the rest of the ingredients. Once the beef is no longer pink, add the salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce and your beef broth.

Bring everything to a simmer then cook uncovered for 10 minutes, adding extra beef broth if necessary to ensure the meat doesn’t go dry.

Step 4. Mash your Potatoes

While the beef cooks, carefully take out the potatoes from the pot, place them in a large bowl with the remaining butter and mash them thoroughly with a fork or a masher. Add salt and pepper to taste.

The potatoes are going to be very hot, which means they’ll be difficult to handle. However, we don’t encourage you letting them cool as this will not only make you take longer cooking your Shepard’s pie but it will make mashing the potatoes much harder.

If you want to add extra taste, and make sure your guests fight for the extra serving, mix cheddar cheese with your mashed potatoes.

Step 5. Prepare the Casserole

If you haven’t preheated your oven, do it now.

Take a large baking dish or an oven friendly casserole, then spread your beef and vegetables in a single, even layer. Spread the mashed potatoes over the beef layer.

Don’t bother making the mashed potatoes be perfectly even, bumps and peaks are encouraged.

If you’re feeling extra creative, use your fork to grace shapes and designs in order to impress your guests and family.

Step 6. Bake

Place in your countertop oven and cooked until it starts to bubble and brown, which will take around 30 minutes. If you want an extra brown, extra crunchy texture broil for a couple minutes extra.

Step 7. Serve

Once the pie is ready, carefully take it out and serve. You can let it cool for a few minutes in the kitchen or serve right away and let it cool while your guests eat something else.

Regardless of what you do, remember to use protective surfaces (such as a soft cloth) on your counters or table to protect it from the heat.

And there you have it, now you know how to make a delicious yet simple Shepard’s pie. Easy, right?
