Let’s face it, most of us have considered some type of aesthetic surgery at some point in our lives. Some of us go through with it and some back out at the last minute. Then there are some who are still in the consideration part of the decision. There are all manner of reasons for someone to consider this type of surgery, but making the decision to go through with it is often not an easy one. It is important to have as much information about the procedure that you are considering when you are in the midst of the decision as possible. Here, we will talk about the differences between cosmetic surgery and what is know as plastic surgery, as well as take a look at the pros and cons of undergoing an aesthetic surgery. We will also talk about where to get one of these procedures.
First, let’s look at the difference between cosmetic and plastic surgery. Plastic surgery is defined as being a “surgical specialty dedicated to reconstructing facial and body defects due to birth disorders, trauma, burns, and disease. Whereas, cosmetic surgery is dedicated to procedures such as breast enhancements, facial and body contouring, and facial and skin rejuvenation. Basically, plastic surgery is fixing a facial or body defect and cosmetic surgery is simply for “enhancement” reasons. Some people consider these things to be one in the same, claiming that not feeling confident with a person’s given breast size is no different that wishing to correct a burned patch of skin. Both of these types of surgeries are meant to change the way a person looks, hence the term, aesthetic surgery. It all comes down the a person’s aesthetics and that for whatever reason, that person is not happy about a certain aspect of their personal aesthetic.
Before going any further, lets define the word, aesthetic. Webster’s dictionary defines the word “aesthetic” as meaning “having a love for beauty; pertaining to the sense or study of beauty or taste”. When we as a society, refer to someone’s aesthetic, we are simply referring to how they look. If we think that person is beautiful, we say they have a lovely aesthetic; however, if we think someone anything less than beautiful, we say they do not have a pleasing aesthetic. The word has come to be synonymous with beautiful for many people, so when they refer to aesthetic surgery, they mean a way to become beautiful.
Another thing to consider regarding aesthetic surgeries is that it is not all tummy tucks, liposuction, and breast enhancements. There is a whole other side of this referred to as “body modifications”. This includes a great many things such as altering one’s ear to resemble that of an elf, using botox to have “horns” on your forehead, and creating a ring on the forehead. This is only a very small sampling of the things that can be done with body modification. Some things are very mild, such as stretching the ear lobe; however, some procedures are quite extreme! Some of the more extreme modifications include a male having the tip of his penis split into two pieces, a female having a permanent corset on their back, and anyone having their tongue split. These types of procedures fall under the category of aesthetic surgery because they all alter a person’s body, face, and/or appearance in general.
Now, for the pros and cons.
First up, the pros.
Pro number 1. Almost Instant Result. As a general rule, when you undergo an aesthetic surgery, the results are basically instanaious. Other than a bit of recovery time, you can see the changes as soon as you wake up.
Pro number 2. Feeling Better About Yourself. If you like the way you look, you will inevitably feel better about yourself. Feeling better about yourself leads to a healthier life, a brighter outlook on life, and often allows even the shyest person to become more outgoing. Liking the way you look causes a person to be happier which leads to better relationships with those around you.
The Cons.
Con number 1. The Cost. This is a very big con for some people as most of these procedures cost a very large sum of money. They can range from a few thousand dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars. It depends on the exact procedure that you are having done and how great the risks are. Also, if you are traveling to your chosen surgeon, you have to factor in the travel costs. Traveling can be expensive, especially the farther you have to go.
Con number 2. The Risk. Any surgery has risks associated with it. These risks range from very minor to deadly. For people, a surgery of this nature could be for medical reasons rather then vanity, but that doesn’t mean that there are no risks and it is always possible that the risks will be greater than the problem it is supposed to fix.
