For my first feature of the year, I wanted to share something that is very important to everyone. If you have a fire detector in your home you have 9 volt batteries and we usually have extra on hand. This story is a very scary, as you can see in the video which I watched earlier today. A fire started by 9 volt batteries that were being saved for recycling, little did the home owner know what would happen when he kept the 9-volt batteries in a paper bag in his garage.

Bottom line is that if batteries are stored together and can touch each other, the metal on metal can spark a fire. Even if you leave these batteries loose in a drawer and they touch a paper clip, this can set off a fire. Here are some
| Safety precautions When Storing 9 Volt Batteries |
New batteries: Keep in original package or use a piece of tape over terminals. Recycling: If your are saving to recycle or disposing of 9-volt batteries the suggestion is to use a piece of tape over the terminals. This will keep the batteries from igniting into a disastrous fire as in the video. If you have multiple fire detectors in your home and will be changing out batteries, there are stores that will safely dispose of batteries. Check through you home for unprotected batteries, take necessary precautions. Please share this story with family and friends. Be safe!!
