6 Ways To Care For Fresh Flowers 39 comments

Recently I wrote about ways to care for fresh flowers, now the difference in a flowers from a florist or a grocery store.

Does it really matter whether you buy fresh flowers from the grocery store or a florist?
There are 2 places you buy fresh flowers; grocery store or florist.

6 Ways To Care For Fresh FlowersFlorist Flowers
Florist flowers tend to stay fresh longer because professional florists are trained to process the flowers with specialty flower food, keeping them at the proper temperature and changing the water.

Its true that florist flowers are more expensive than those that you can buy in the grocery store, but the quality of the flowers outweighs the higher cost.

Plus a florist can work with you to create custom arrangements with a professional flare for special occasions, weddings and funerals.Florists of course are more knowledgeable and care more about flowers than the grocery store.

A florist makes flowers their business, and because they do, you receive the best quality and advice on caring for your flowers when you bring them home or order them to be delivered.

Supermarket Flowers
Supermarket flowers are often short-lived because the flowers are not cared for properly to keep them fresh.

Affordability: Supermarket stores flowers are affordable and cost a fraction of a professional bouquets from a florist. But flower selection is usually limited to stock on hand than the average floral shop.

Service: There is not usually someone there to answer questions you may have, you see a supermarket floral department is not a priority and the quality might not be the best.

So as you can see there are advantages and disadvantages in buying your flowers from a florist rather than the supermarket store. While it can be convenient and affordable there will be times when you will need the service of a florist such as “melbourne flower delivery from Fresh Flowers“.

Which ever way you go giving and receiving fresh flowers is and a gesture of love, encouragement, or friendship and supermarket flowers supermarket bouquets cost between $6 and $15, where as whereas the average cost of floral arrangements varies from $40 to $100. So it really comes down to our budgets but from time to time we like to splurge.

I only buy flowers from a grocery store if it is last minute because like you mentioned they just don’t look as fresh and glowing which you want if you are giving them as a gift!

  • lisa

I usually skip both and cut flowers from my garden. I love them but they die. I can’t justify spending the money when I can apply it towards a quality silk flower arrangement.

I love flowers, they are so cheering. I live in south Florida & can grow flowers year round so I rarely buy them from anywhere.

  • debbie

Ive bought from both but if money wasnt a factor I would buy from a florist because they hve such a varied selection and you can pick and they make up the bouquet how you want it

Thanks for these fabulous tips. I do love all the advantages you get from buying at a florist the downfall is the price. I personally don’t buy fresh flowers and would love to, to dress up the decor a bit. I might start with the grocery store though first to save a little money unless it’s for a special occasion.

I didn’t really know the difference between grocery flowers and florist flowers until now, I just thought flowers were flowers, but now I know why florist flowers are pricier; thanks for posting!

Sometimes you can find a local nursery and buy flowers directly from them. Check your yellow pages.

I have only purchased flowers from farmers markets, but I have received flowers from a grocery store. The ones from the grocery store did not last very long.

  • Cheryl Grandy

The advantages and disadvantages are definitely worth considering when deciding where to buy flowers. Thanks for the information.

I just adore getting flowers, no matter where they come from! Flowers from the florists do tend to last longer, but I’ve had some grocery store bouquets that lasted a couple of weeks! I’m just thrilled with any of them.

Thanks Sue for stopping by, yes florist flowers are always fresh in their place of business as with grocery store they could have been sitting instore for several days before buying, this the short time they will remain pretty.

Hi Debbie, I love it when the grocery store flowers last. And I have had florist flowers that have not lasted as long, I call them and they will make an adjustment.

I wish I had a yard where I could grow beautiful flowers, but I live in a desert landscaped yard and does not provide areas for growing.
    Thank you for stopping by!!

Hi Rita, I was just saying I wish I lived where I could grow my own, I surely would. Living in the desert has its drawbacks.

I have found some gorgeous flowers at Costco, but florists usually do it better. 🙂

  • Karren Haller Post author

Awww I have not tired flowers from Costco, good idea. Such a few little tricks and they last longer.

  • Robin W

Fresh cut flowers are soooo expensive that I rarely purchase them. But when I do, it’s usually from a grocery store. I really prefer to get them from my yard whenever some are in bloom.

  • Karren Haller Post author

HI Robin, I like you like to cut them fresh from a garden, I am working on building a rose garden, their my favorite of course next to carnations that last for a week or more.
Thanks for visiting, wishing you a great day! Karren

It really depends on the place you buy from. The supermarket Bought my flowers from was able to special order in the ones I wanted, I just had to let them know in advance. Which I think you would have to do with a regular florist too if you wanted specific ones.

  • Karren Haller Post author

I agree Sarah, good point to have them order in what you want! Thanks for stopping by!

Very interesting article. I wish we had a nice florist here. I have bought flowers at a flower shop and at a store and found beautiful flowers at both. I think the flowers from the florist shop are fresher and last longer. Thank you for such a good article

Hi Chris, thank you for stopping back by. Enjoyed your Linkup!!
Hope you have a great week!

  • Laurie

I have been given flowers from florists and grocery stores and it really just depends on the place. I have had them die really fast from some grocery stores while they stay alive a long time from the florists and vice versa. Thanks for sharing!

  • Karren Haller Post author

I too have had flowers from florists, grocery stores and fresh cut and the care when first putting them into a vase is the most important.
Thank you for your comment, sorry for my late reply!
    Have a beautiful spring!
