Utah has mountains, lakes, deserts, canyons, high peaks and plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities. There is a mix of BLM (Bureau of Land Management) lands, National Forests to explore, state parks, national parks and private campgrounds. You can find spots where free camping is allowed to a wide range of catered opportunities. If you renting a car, keep in mind where you might like to be sleeping at night to ensure you choose a car with the right amount of clearance to get you where you want to go.

See The Mighty Five
Utah’s well known national parks have become known as The Mighty Five. Attracting millions of visitors every year these parks have famously known sites and also offer the chance to get off the beaten path for the more adventurous. If you plan to visit two or more parks, make sure you check and consider buying the National Parks pass. By purchasing the annual pass you will be granted entry into all the national parks and a number of other national recreation areas making the pass a good deal. If you are only going to one park, it may be more advantageous to pay the single entry fee. Here is a quick break down of The Mighty Five:
Capitol Reef National Park: This area was protected in 1937 by Franklin D Roosevelt to protect the areas colorful canyons, ridges, monoliths, petroglyphs and buttes. One of the outstanding features of this park to check out is the Capitol Dome Formation.
Bryce Canyon National Park: Known for the distinct geologic features called hoodoos, Bryce Canyon National Park has been delighting visitors for ages. Despite the parks name however, the features do not actually form a canyon but are rather a collection of hoodoos in a giant natural amphitheater along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. This park is one for the bucket list for its unique landscapes.
Arches National Park: With over 2000 natural sandstone arches this park lies north of Moab. This park lies atop an underground evaporate layer or salt bed. This is the main cause for the unique formation of spires, balanced rocks and arches. Two of the most well-known arches are the massive and red-hued Delicate Arch and the parks longest arch, Landscape Arch.
Zion National Park: Those that are into wildlife viewing opportunities this is the park for you. Zion is home to at least 289 different bird species and 75 mammal species. If you are looking for adventure and are not afraid of heights, make sure you check out the thrilling hike to Angels Landing.
Canyonlands National Park: To get off the beaten path a bit more Canyonlands National Park is the place to go. With deep canyons, pinnacles, cliffs, spires and towering mesas, one could spend weeks in this one park alone. The Needles district has some spectacular hikes and makes sure you check out the visitor center at Island in the Sky.

Even the most adventurous of people may want a little break from roughing it. If you find yourself tiring of sleeping on the ground Utah has a huge range of different accommodation options to get you a break from setting up a tent every night. If you have been camping your accommodation costs should have been lower so perhaps you will have it in your budget to find a nice place to stay for a few nights. Don’t overlook some of the deals to be found by renting a house or private villa. Particularly if you are traveling as a group or family, many people have been pleasantly surprised that the cost can be much more affordable if you are splitting the costs. If you are traveling as a couple, then it still could be a very memorable addition to your trip.
Take in the Culture
Park City has been named one the twenty “prettiest towns in the United States” by Forbes Traveler Magazine. Home to the Sundance Film Festival this town has a strong arts and culture scene. With a vibe that still retains the remanence of the Wild West while evolving with modern conveniences, Park City is a cool town to check out.
Visit a Ghost Town
Located near Fairview, Utah Thistle Ghost Town is a neat spot to check out. With only a few structures remaining this is a very abandoned ghost town. Most of the structures are visible from the road making it a quick and easy stop.
