If you smoke, then you probably already know that it can wreak havoc with your health. Smoking leads to a range of harmful and sometimes fatal diseases, and it can significantly increase your chances of developing serious conditions later in life such as lung or oral cancer, heart disease, or stroke. Smoking also substantially increases your risk of suffering from a heart attack and developing respiratory problems, such as COPD. If you have been smoking for a while, then it’s likely that you’ve already noticed some of the adverse effects of this bad habit, such as shortness of breath, dull, dry skin, flaky nails, and thinning hair.
But, many smokers are fully aware of the health risks when they begin smoking, and knowing that it might happen to them simply isn’t enough to motivate them to crack the habit for good. However, it’s not just your health that will benefit when you finally smoke your last cigarette and say goodbye to them forever. We’ve listed some of the top reasons to quit smoking:
Reason #1. Save Money:
Aside from health issues, another massive problem for smokers is the cost. With the government hiking up the prices of cigarettes on a regular basis to discourage people from starting smoking and to give smokers more reason to quit, it’s no surprise that a pack-a-day habit can quickly leave you with no money to enjoy anything else. When you quit smoking, you will be surprised at just how much money you can save! At an average cost of around $5 per pack or even as high as $10 in some states, the money you’ll save will quickly add up. If you smoke one pack a day at $5 each, for example, you’ll save a huge $1,825 over a year that can go towards paying for anything that you like, or even be put away into savings. You could treat yourself to an Aruba all-inclusive vacation!
Reason #2. Stop Endangering Others:
Many smokers don’t realize just how dangerous the effects of second-hand smoke are. Although most public areas have strict no-smoking rules, smoking around other people outside, for example, is also endangering them from inhaling your cigarette smoke, which contains thousands of harmful chemicals, over forty of which are known carcinogens. If somebody is at a high risk of heart attack or stroke, then it only takes a small amount of second-hand smoke to trigger the condition. To help you quit and eliminate the dangers of your second-hand smoke harming others, you may want to consider switching to vaping with premium e juice, as this doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals or carcinogens that will harm either yourself or others. Be sure to research your liquids, as some are known to have diacetyl in them. This chemical is linked to causing a condition known as popcorn lung , so avoid lower quality e juices that contain this ingredient.
Reason #3. Get Your Senses Back:
Smokers often experience a dulling of their senses; many simply can’t appreciate the smell and taste of things as much as they did before they started to smoke. Breathing in the fumes of cigarette smoke is very toxic to your senses, and it’s mainly your sense of smell that takes a hit – which has a direct effect on your ability to taste. Thankfully, this can be reversed when you quit smoking either by going cold turkey or using a nicotine replacement therapy. You’ll also be glad to hear that if you switch to vaping, you can also still get your sense of smell and taste back since the vapor from e-liquid is neither harmful nor toxic to the senses.
Reason #4. Avoid Premature Aging:
One of the biggest problems for smokers regarding appearance is premature aging. Smoking increases the development of fine lines and wrinkles, and causes the skin to dry out; leathery skin isn’t uncommon amongst smokers. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, smoking brings about a number of biochemical changes in the body which will speed up the aging process, causing smokers to look older than they actually are. One of the main ways that this happens is through the skin tissues being deprived of oxygen when the blood vessels are constricted. As a result, the flow of blood to the skin is slowed down, causing it to dry out and wrinkle a lot sooner.
Reason #5. Stop Getting Coughs and Colds:
Everybody finds themselves with a cough or cold from time to time, but did you know that being a smoker can actually increase your risk? Smokers tend to get viral and bacterial infections a lot more often than non-smokers; cigarettes make you more susceptible to colds and seasonal flu by weakening your immune system and making it more difficult for your body to fight infections off. One of the most toxic effects of cigarette smoke is that it paralyzes cilia, the tiny hairs that line the respiratory tract and prevent bacteria and viruses from passing through. However, this is also another problem that can be reversed when you quit – within around a month of smoking your last cigarette, your cilia will be working back to normal again.
Reason #6. Enjoy Exercise More:
Keeping fit as a smoker is immensely difficult, especially if you can’t do any kind of cardiovascular activity without quickly getting out of breath. Since smoking causes your heart and lungs to work harder, putting them under extra pressure, for example by working out, this means that you’ll be out of breath a lot faster and won’t be able to perform to the best of your ability. Over time, many smokers report that their ability to do anything physical, from working out at the gym to something as simple as climbing a flight of stairs, becomes diminished.
Reason #7. Stop Smelling Like an Ashtray:
One of the top tell-tale signs that somebody smokes is the smell. When you smoke a cigarette, the smell gets everywhere – in your hair, your clothes, and the immediate surroundings. However, when you regularly smoke, this smell is something that you simply get used to, causing you to barely notice it, whilst for others, it’s all that they can smell every time they are around you. Unsurprisingly, the smell of smoke is shunned in society, and it can easily be a reason for people not wanting to come to visit you at home, for example, if they feel they are going to be stifled by the smell of smoke the whole time. So, quit smoking and enjoy the fresh air again!
Reason #8. Improve Your Dating Life:
Yes, it’s true – whilst smoking often starts off as a method of socializing for many people, there’s definitely a stigma against smokers in society today. Along with this, if you are currently in the dating game and trying to find a mate, then you’ve probably had a lot of guys or girls tell you that they wouldn’t go out with somebody who smoked for various reasons. Non-smokers will often refuse to date a smoker since they don’t want their own health to suffer from second-hand smoke and can’t handle the smell of stale smoke everywhere that they go. Plus, if you are dating somebody and you care about them, you don’t want to worry that they are going to become ill with a smoking-related condition. So, don’t sell yourself short when it comes to dating – quitting smoking will significantly improve your options.
Reason #9. Get Whiter Teeth:
One of the most apparent signs that somebody is a smoker is stained, yellow teeth. After a while, this could even turn into brown or black teeth as the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke erode the enamel and cause decay. Along with this, one of the biggest risk factors for periodontal disease is smoking; this condition weakens the gums and causes the teeth to detach from them, which could even result in tooth loss. If your teeth are looking more yellow than white these days, then it’s likely to be a direct result of smoking. Thankfully, there are many methods that you can use to whiten your teeth at home, or you can certainly improve their appearance with a simple scale and polish from your dental hygienist. But, once your pearly whites are finally white again, you’ll need to keep them that way! The best way to do this is to stay away from cigarettes.
Reason #10. A Cleaner Home:
If you smoke at home, then quitting will transform your living space. Every smoker knows that it’s not a clean habit; full ashtrays can be disgusting, and even when you empty them, there can be a layer of ash left behind that settles on the surfaces around your home. In addition, many smokers often find themselves regularly vacuuming to get rid of ash in the carpet, all of which can leave behind a horrible stale smoke smell and make your home a nasty-smelling place to be. When you quit smoking, you can give your home a full spring clean and relax in the knowledge that it’s going to stay that way! Get acquainted with Masterson Law to know some more associative things
