Time immemorial, human civilization has seen diamonds as a significant part of society. This gemstone has claimed massive essentiality in our lives. With the surge in the usage rates and the distribution of diamonds worldwide, the consumers now seek to learn more about diamonds and their characteristics, including the type of cuts, quality grades, shapes, designs, among others. In the past, few cuts were available, and it would cost a fortune to make a customized set. But nowadays, there are a lot of jewelers who are customer-centric and focus on developing custom diamond earrings, and rings.

You can grade the quality of the diamond based upon four key elements, namely, cut, clarity, color, and carat. Out of these four, cut is the most crucial factor, and the utter brilliance of the diamond lies in this factor.

Cut

The distribution of light is crucial in a diamond, and this depends substantially on the cut of the diamond. Some of the typical diamond cuts are as follows;

  • Round Brilliant: It has a 58-facet cut, which is calibrated for supreme brilliance
  • Cushion-Cut: This cut is also referred to as the pillow cut. A blend of old mine cut, emerald cut, and the antique cut
  • Princess-Cut: A square cut with many facets. This cut looks brilliant on women with long fingers
  • Oval Diamond: Popular among females with small hands and fingers. This cut creates an illusion of longer fingers
  • Marquise: Elongated cut with pointy ends
  • Pear-Shaped: The shape is in the form of a pear, resembling the oval and marquise cut
  • Emerald-Cut: Rectangle Shape with cropped corners. The long lines of this cut tend to create dramatic blazes of light, appealing to many customers
  • Heart-Shaped: A unique shape. Although what matters most is the skill of the cutter. A slight mistake can result in the disruption of the shape
  • Trilliant-Cut: A triangular-shaped cut, for those who seek unique work
  • Radiant Cut: Has seventy facets with a square or a rectangle shape, possessing of chopped corners
  • Asscher Cut: A mixture of an emerald cut and a square shape with cropped edges

Color

The less color a diamond possesses, the better it will shine. There are five color ranges of diamonds, which is assigned a letter grade for better evaluation.

Carat

Carat relates to the weight of the diamond. The larger the carat, the costlier the stone is. This unit of measuring diamonds evaluates the precise size of the stone.

Clarity

The clarity of a diamond rests upon the location of flaws, the number of defects, and the number of blemishes on the stone. A flawless diamond is very rare. Depending on the inclusions, diamonds get different grades.

While choosing the type of diamond, one should not get confused between these four key elements. The price of the diamond depends upon all the four factors held together. For instance, even though two diamonds may weigh the same, the price can vary drastically based on the color and the cut of the diamond.
